Eilish Buckley

Law Clerk, Gilbert Walker

I have quickly been given my own files to look after, and enjoy seeing the development of a claim from start to finish. The work is engaging, and the team is very supportive and collaborative.

What kind of work do you do?

Gilbert Walker is a boutique litigation firm, and as such we work on litigating and resolving disputes. Our main practice is in commercial, regulatory and insurance-based disputes, though I have been able to work on a range of legal issues across files.

What do you enjoy most about working in your firm?

I welcome the opportunities that are offered to me even as a junior at the firm. I have quickly been given my own files to look after, and enjoy seeing the development of a claim from start to finish. The work is engaging, and the team is very supportive and collaborative.

What are the most challenging parts of your work?

Having to rapidly learn a set of litigation skills. Law school can’t completely prepare you for the realities of practice, and there is additional pressure that comes from knowing that these are real clients. That said, it is rewarding when you start to ask the right questions and understand the process.

What makes your firm different?

Thanks to being a boutique firm, Gilbert Walker offers opportunities to work closely with excellent lawyers and external counsel, while delivering thoughtful and precise work.

What are the social opportunities like at Gilbert Walker?

The social team routinely plans events throughout the year, both within our firm and with other firms around Auckland.

“Most of the firm’s former junior staff have left the firm to pursue study overseas, including at Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and NYU. Gilbert Walker is happy to assist departing staff in finding positions at top international firms.”

Most of the firm’s former junior staff have left the firm to pursue study overseas, including at Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and NYU. Gilbert Walker is happy to assist departing staff in finding positions at top international firms.

Numerous aspects of a student’s legal education are applicable to working at Gilbert Walker. Their cases cover a wide range of legal issues, including contract, tort, company law, trusts, insurance, and professional liability. Mooting, advocacy, negotiating and strong legal writing skills are highly relevant to the firm’s work.

Opportunities for Students

The junior solicitors employed by Gilbert Walker most commonly previously served as judge’s clerks or prosecutors, but the firm also employs exceptional candidates directly out of law school.
