Property Lawyer, Anderson Lloyd

“Every day you are working one-on-one with the partners and senior lawyers, who take the time to teach and mentor juniors without any pressure or intimidation.”

What kind of work have you been involved with at Anderson Lloyd?

I started at Anderson Lloyd as a summer clerk, rotating through the Corporate Commercial and Resource Management teams. I have now found my permanent spot in the Property and Private Client team. My role in this team mostly involves commercial property work such as preparing and reviewing leases, local government work and assisting with the legal side of new property developments. The fast-paced, transactional nature of the work means each day is engaging and rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about working at Anderson Lloyd?

For me, what makes an employer is the employees. The people at AL create an environment that makes you want to be at work every day. They are supportive, fun and each bring something unique to the office culture. Another aspect I enjoy about working at AL is that each day is different. Not only is there a wide variety of work that comes in but you are also able to get involved in meaningful work even as a clerk. I’ve enjoyed property work as it ranges from exciting long-term projects to smaller, process-based transactions that you can feel more confident in at a junior-level.

What has been the most challenging part of working at Anderson Lloyd?

Coming out of 4-5+ years at law school, it’s easy to feel comfortable that you know most of the tips and tricks for success in an academic setting. Unfortunately, not much of this translates to working in a law firm, which can be daunting. I found it challenging to understand that making a ton of mistakes and picking things up slower than everyone else was expected – it didn’t mean I wasn’t cut out for the job. Luckily, your colleagues have all experienced this steep learning curve at one point too and will help reassure you that it does get easier!

What sets Anderson Lloyd apart from other firms?

The culture created at AL is something that means it is not just another law firm. Each office is small enough that you get to know everyone well while still being part of a large, nationally-recognised firm with exciting opportunities available. Anderson Lloyd provides an environment where you don’t feel like you’re just another cog in a wheel. Juniors get a high level of partner contact and you get the valuable opportunity to work alongside very talented people right from the beginning of your legal career.

What are the social opportunities like at Anderson Lloyd?

Within the first few weeks, we had plenty of social events filling up our calendar. The firm and the social committee know how to put on a shindig – whether it’s getting overly competitive at a pub quiz, clay shooting at the partner’s house or bonding at team retreats, there is always something on to get to know your colleagues better and blow off some steam. It goes without saying that the mid-winter and Christmas parties are always not to be missed events too! We also have weekly team coffees, morning teas put on for various events as well as Friday night drinks and nibbles.

What has surprised you about working at Anderson Lloyd?

I was surprised when AL didn’t live up to the picture I had in my head of a corporate law firm. I had watched enough Suits to know a big firm should be a cutthroat, elitist, high-stress environment. The lack of a noticeable hierarchy at AL really struck me and has been a welcome surprise. Every day you are working one-on-one with the partners and senior lawyers, who take the time to teach and mentor juniors without any pressure or intimidation.

What would your advise to students be who are wishing to apply to Anderson Lloyd?

My advice would be to highlight why your personal values connect with the values of Anderson Lloyd as a firm – this ensures you’re a good fit for the firm but also that you are going to enjoy your role too. At the end of the day, there is not mould to fit at Anderson Lloyd. Be yourself and bring your individuality to the recruitment process.
